Photo: Winter PicturesAlistair Moffat was born in 1950, and in 1976, following degrees at St Andrews, Edinburgh and London universities, began a five-year period in charge of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Afterwards, he moved to Scottish Television, latterly as Director of Programmes and Chief Executive of Network Production, before resigning these posts in 1999 and settling in the Borders, where he is Director of the Lennoxlove and Borders Book Festivals. His recent books include Tyneside (2006) and The Reivers (2008), both of which have been made into television series, and (with James F. Wilson) The Scots: A Genetic Journey (2011). In October 2011 he was elected Rector of the University of St Andrews.
