StAnza Venues: Balmungo House

StAnza at Balmungo HouseLocation: Balmungo House, Balmungo, St Andrews, Fife KY16 8LW  (NB  Not shown on StAnza venues map)

In 1960 Wilhelmina Barns-Graham inherited from her aunt Mary Neish a family home, Balmungo House, situated near to St Andrews. Since that moment Barns-Graham divided her time equally between there and her home in St Ives, Barnaloft, simultaneously establishing her as much a Scottish as Cornish artist. Balmungo House came to be at the heart of her business, and as a consequence it was her wish that Balmungo House be the centre for her charitable trust.

The house has been completely refurbished. This necessary work has enabled the Trust to provide public access to Barns-Graham's life and work, and at the same time become the administrative hub for the Trust's activities. Balmungo House also provides access to the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Archive that comprises her private papers, her collection of photographs, as well as art and other related documents. Additionally, the Archive includes her library of art books and art magazines. Access to the Archive is available by application to anyone interested in Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and 20th century British art. With the recent completion of Balmungo House's refurbishment, the Trust has now been able to start to fulfil its final ambition, to run a programme of live-in residencies for artists and writers.

Disabled Access: Only the ground floor of Balmungo House has disabled access. Please contact StAnza to discuss any access issues.
