Poetry Map of Scotland poem no. 92: Loch Ard

Wild swimming, Loch Ard

toes curl around
smooth drowned stones
sway with the gentle
slap, slap of water
fingers trail through
peat kissed water
watching the trail of heads
bob towards the island
blue, green, blue, green
arms stretch out to their target
slip back into the ink
ancient waters hold their secrets deep
absorb echoes of battle
whispers of life
warmth penetrates the shallows
cold sends tendrils to trap the sirens
giggles announce they have reached land
smiles sweep across the loch
raise my head
surrender sight to the sun
