Make it Loud!
Performance has always been a vital element of the poetic tradition: poetry began as an oral culture, and poets of all stripes need at some point in their careers to share their work aloud. Recently the new medium of spoken word has celebrated the oral nature of poetry through encouraging poets to embody their work and dynamically perform it onstage.
In this workshop, two members of Scotland’s acclaimed spoken word collective Loud Poets will guide you through the process of writing and performing your own work for the stage. Katie and Kevin will share some poems demonstrating the range of possibilities within the spoken word medium, give advice on writing material for performance, and give practical advice for how to perform live (how to use a microphone and how to memorise material, for instance). They’ll also guide you through exercises to get you writing and sharing your own material: everyone will have the chance to pen a new piece and practice sharing it with the group. Whether you’re an experienced poet who’s never performed your work aloud before, a seasoned performer, or new to the craft, this workshop offers you a chance to reflect on how to best communicate your work to a live audience.
