Sarah Corbett and Katie Garner on female poets from the Romantic era

Our Past & Present sessions offer contemporary speakers and poets a chance to share their enthusiasm for favourite past poets. In this session, we’re celebrating poets who have traditionally been overshadowed by their male counterparts. Sarah Corbett will be discussing Dorothy Wordsworth, a British writer, poet and diarist best known for her lyrical descriptions of nature. Katie Garner will be exploring mermaids and underwater fantasies in the work of three Romantic-era poets, namely Ann Radcliffe (of Udolpho fame), Anne Bannerman and Jessie Stewart. While little is known about Jessie Stewart, Ann Radcliffe was celebrated by Walter Scott as the ‘first poetess of romantic fiction’, and Anne Bannerman was particularly praised by fellow poets for her gothic ballads.
