Lawrence Schimel

Lawrence Schimel is a bilingual (Spanish/English) author and literary translator. His translations into English include the novels La Bastarda by Trifonia Melibea Obono (The Feminist Press) and The Wild Book by Juan Villoro (Hope Road, as well as the poetry collections I Offer My Heart as a Target by Johanny Vázquez Paz (Akashic), winner of the Paz Prize, and Hatchet by Carmen Boullosa (White Pine), which was awarded the Cliff Becker Book Prize in Translation. His translations into Spanish include the graphic novel They Called Us Enemy by George Takei (Top Shelf), Koleka Putuma's poetry collection Collective Amnesia (Flores Raras, a co-translation with Arrate Hidalgo), and narrative non-fiction, The Art of Cruelty and Bluets, by Maggie Nelson (both Tres Puntos). He has received a number of awards for his translations, including a PEN Translates Award from English PEN, a Highly Commended Award in the UK's CLiPPA for children's poetry, a Lambda Literary Award finalist, an Eisner Award finalist
