Public transport
Despite not having its own station, St Andrews is easy to get to by public transport. Simply take a train to Leuchars (LTS), which is 6 miles away from St Andrews, and then hop on one of the regular buses straight from the station to St Andrews. The bus ride takes around ten minutes.
There are a couple of trains an hour from Edinburgh to Leuchars. We might be biased, but the stretch of coastline on this route is one of the most stunning railway journeys Scotland has to offer!
If travelling from Glasgow, you can change trains at Haymarket for Leuchars, or get a direct train to Dundee, and then travel to St Andrews either via Leuchars or on the 99 bus.
You can get direct trains (along the gorgeous East Coast line!) from London, York, Newcastle and Aberdeen to Leuchars with LNER.
For more information on rail links, take a look at the National Rail or ScotRail websites.
Bike
St Andrews is situated on Route 1 of the National Cycle Network – so if you’re feeling really adventurous, you could cycle to StAnza all the way from Edinburgh, or even from Newcastle or Aberdeen! If you’re just up for the day though, you might want to cycle to and from Leuchars railway station. The route is largely off-road and takes roughly forty minutes. It’s signposted, and also marked on the online CycleStreets map.
If travelling on an LNER train to Leuchars, don’t forget to make a free bike reservation!
There is secure bike parking on Abbey Street just along from our hub venue, the Byre Theatre. (Check out this map to discover more bike parking and bike shops in St Andrews.)
Taxi
If you’re looking for a taxi while at StAnza, we recommend St Andrews Shuttle (07902 488770), which provides lifts in town as well as pick-ups and drop-offs from nearby stations and Edinburgh airport.
Travelling from Europe
There are some fantastic sustainable options for getting from continental Europe to St Andrews.
Eurostar offers direct trains to London from cities including Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam. Once your Eurostar arrives in (the beautiful) St Pancras railway station, you just need to cross the road to Kings Cross, where you can get a direct train up the East Coast to Leuchars, the nearest railway station to St Andrews.
Alternatively, you can get a DFDS ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle, before getting a direct train north to Leuchars. (This option is most cost-effective if travelling as a couple or in a group.)
From the airport
If you’ve arrived at Edinburgh airport, you’ll want to catch the Jet 747 bus service. This leaves from outside Edinburgh International Arrivals, operating transfers to the north. Leave the bus at Inverkeithing Station and take the train to Leuchars (ScotRail).
Alternatively, you can travel by tram to Edinburgh Gateway, and then transfer to a train to Leuchars.
