We’re all now familiar with the familiar narrative of environmental destruction, and how it will probably end. But how about those writers who seek to re-imagine this story, whose alternative environmental narratives provide a different lens for viewing what we think we know? This afternoon’s reading will feature two poets who do just that. Claire Crowther’s Solar Cruise tells the story of a relationship between a poet and a physicist who is devoted to solar energy, enquiring into the similarities and differences between the ways artists and scientists negotiate their relationship with readers / societies and the formal parameters of their disciplines. J.O. Morgan’s The Martian’s Regress tells many stories within one story, imagining a whole genre of folktales, nursery songs, myths and histories which inform the titular Martian’s upbringing and their resultant understanding of the world.
