2022 marks the centenary of the publication of T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land and James Joyce’s Ulysses – landmarks in the history of modernist writing, after which Ezra Pound reputedly signed all his letters P.U. (Post Ulysses). To mark this, our Past and Present strand this year sees contemporary poets responding to the work of key modernist poets. Today’s event pairs Claire Crowther speaking about the influence of Veronica Forrest Thomson, the late modernist poet and critical thinker associated with the Cambridge School (who was raised in Glasgow), and Matt Welton comparing and contrasting the significance of two very different modernists, Stein and Stevens, for his own practice and contemporary writing more broadly.

Live in St Andrews, with Matt Welton appearing via Zoom.
