In 2023’s final breakfast event, María Armental, Niall O’Gallagher, Khairani Barokka and Ignacio Cartagena Núñez discuss translation and ecopoetics. The subject of poetic translation has always been a fascinating theatre for conversations around how the interpretation of art does (or does not) transcend its local meanings and connotations; ecopoetics too is a field deeply dependent on the communication of local knowledge. For the last breakfast of our festival, we dig into some fascinating conundrums.
María Armental is a poet and translator. She is the translator of Douglas Dunn’s poetic works into Galician. Niall O’Gallagher is a poet, translator, and journalist, and the City of Glasgow’s first Gaelic Poet Laureate. Khairani Barokka is an Indonesian writer, editor, and artist based in London, and is Editor of Modern Poetry in Translation. Ignacio Cartagena Núñez is a poet, diplomat, and Consul General of Spain in Edinburgh.
