The Friday of this year’s festival has been dedicated primarily to questions of exile, migration, belonging and tracing one’s roots, and will culminate in an exciting triple bill from three major writers born respectively in Zambia, Jamaica and Syria, currently living in the UK / the US. Kayo Chingonyi will read from A Blood Condition, shortlisted for the Forward, T.S. Eliot and Costa Prizes this year, exploring how distance and time, nations and a century’s history can collapse within a body through the people, places, cultures and memories that form us. Multiple-prizewinning poet Safiya Sinclair will join us via Zoom to read from Cannibal, a collection which ‘examines what it means to be a woman, what it means to live in exile, and what it means to be other.’ Syrian-British poet Nouri Al-Jarrah will read from four decades of work written in exile, including poems from A Boat to Lesbos and his most recent work, a tragic love story between a Syrian immigrant and a Celtic woman of the Catuvellauni (tribe) written in epic form, combining Eastern and Western mythologies with historical events.
