Hélène Cixous once wrote: ‘At a certain moment, for the person who has lost everything, whether that means a being or a country, language becomes the country. One enters the country of words.’ For Nidhi Zak, her poetry is a journey through that country. Yousif M. Qasmiyeh’s collection Writing the Camp was a PBS Spring Recommendation in 2021, and draws upon his experiences of the Baddawi refugee camp in Lebanon. His writing draws upon his interests in containment, archive and time in refugee writing. This morning’s reading offers two very different approaches to challenging themes. As both poets are reading by Zoom, Padraig Regan, StAnza’s poet in residence will offer a short opening reading.
