In his first return to StAnza since 2013, George Szirtes will share work spanning five decades of poetry, in the cosy surroundings of the St Leonards yurt. Having travelled to the UK as an eight-year-old refugee following the Hungarian uprising in 1956, George’s work has been haunted by his family’s knowledge of war, occupation and exile, while seeking out universal themes of love, humanity and truth, beyond and through it all. His writing persists in a belief in the possibility of happiness despite apprehensions of potential disaster.

NB: please meet at the Byre Theatre on Level 2 (near the festival desk) at 5:30, and you will walk to  the venue together with George.
