The first of this year’s lunchtime Poetry Café events pairs two writers who have both responded in different ways to the art of cabaret. Keith Hutson’s collection Baldwin’s Catholic Geese presents a series of narrative sketches of music hall and variety artistes from the 1800s to the present day. These sad, funny, tragic, and often extraordinary stories not only resurrect the past, but comment upon how we live today. Georgi Gill’s recent collection Limbo is an episodic narrative sequence in which she imagines and explores queer experiences of life in 1933 Berlin through a cabaret lens.
