Five O’Clock Verses

Friday 4 March, 17:00 - 18:00
Parliament Hall, South Street

Anna Crowe, Michael Donhauser, Odile Kennel, Don Paterson in a special VERSschmuggel (verse smuggling) reading

As part of our focus on German for 2016, we are delighted to be featuring a special Five O’Clock Verses in association with poesiefestival berlin. In 2014 six Scottish poets were paired with six German language poets as part of a VERSschmuggel (verse-smuggling) project. The twelve poets worked in pairs on the translations, supported by linguists and interlinear translations. The result was an intense smuggling of cultural connotations, poetic traditions and composition methods. The resulting poetry was presented in two events in Berlin and has now been gathered into an anthology published by Freight Books and the German publisher, Wunderhorn. Four of the poets from the project come together at StAnza to read a selection of their poems: Odile Kennel, Anna Crowe, Michael Donhauser and Don Paterson, and the VERSschmuggel project co-ordinator, Aurelie Maurin, will also be present.

The Scottish-German VERSschmuggel translation workshop is a joint project of the Literaturwerkstatt Berlin, the Verlag Das Wunderhorn and Freight Books with the kind assistance of the British Council, Creative Scotland, the Capital Cultural Fund Berlin and the Goethe-Institut.
